Product Description: Pregnancy should be a time of wonder and hope, but these days, it's associated more often with paranoia. Dr. Glade Curtis is keenly aware of the anxieties heaped upon expectant women: he has written several pregnancy-related books. So while he covers pretty much any topic that an expectant mom might be concerned about, he does not overload the reader with extraneous information or horror stories that can be found in that other best-selling pregnancy guide. In this completely revised and updated edition, Curtis describes the physical developments from weeks 1 through 40--or 41 or 42!--such as the size and weight of the baby, emotional changes in the mother, typical medical tests offered, and nutritional requirements. (The iron found in prenatal vitamins may exacerbate morning sickness, he writes, because iron supplementation is usually not needed until the final trimester.) It is too bad that Dr. Curtis does not recommend more alternative-medicine approaches for treating common pregnancy discomforts. In the chapter covering Week 8, he rightly describes sciatic-nerve pain as excruciating, but does not advise yoga or chiropractic treatments for its relief. However, he *is* hip to the use of doulas, or labor coaches, he encourages breastfeeding, and includes numerous tips for making your partner feel included in what should be a thrilling experience for you both. --Erica Jorgensen

- Great for first-timers, or those that just can't wait!
(Rating: 5 of 5) | Being first time parents, we had many questions, but most of all were excited and anxious to learn all that we could about our little miracle. This book details week by week what you should be feeling, how your body is changing and how the baby is changing. It addresses topics when they are relevant to the development of your baby and your pregnancy. It also gives you something to look forward to each week to sit down and read, rather than month by month! So much happens in one month during pregnancy, I can't imagine reading a book that sums it up all in one chapter! (And I did...but I didn't like it nearly as much!) I would say this is a MUST HAVE for every new mommy and daddy! It's especially helpful during those first few months, when not much seems to be happening, it gives actual size illustrations, so you can see exactly how big your little one is! |
- If you only buy one pregnancy book, this is it!
(Rating: 5 of 5) | The pregnancy book market seems to be monopolized by "What to Expect...." However, "Your Pregnancy Week by Week" is a far better buy. I found this book about five weeks into my pregnancy and haven't picked up "What to Expect" since. This book is far more detail-oriented and relevant to weekly and daily aspects of pregnancy. It tells you things that you never learn from "What to Expect," such as the amazing "double in size" that your baby experiences during the seventh week. It makes me feel much more aware of what's happening with my baby. The book devotes roughly ten pages of information for each week of pregnancy from Week 3 through Week 40. The information is very informative and specific to each week. It includes extra articles about such topics as nutrition, medication during pregnancy, skin changes, and exercise. It also includes pages for you to write down things you need to tell your obstetrician, and contains a sample first-OB-visit questionnaire that proved invaluable to my husband and I as we prepared for our first doctor's visit. Each week also includes a picture of what your baby looks like, including "actual size" drawings during the early weeks. I found it very interesting to find out my baby's approximate size and weight. My husband and I have read this book together every week of our pregnancy. It has meant so much to both of us to see how our baby is progressing each week, instead of each month. He especially appreciates the "Dad Tips" found in every chapter. This book has become an important part of our pregnancy, and it will for you, too! |
- Great week-by-week drawings of the baby
(Rating: 4 of 5) | I like the drawings of what the baby looks like at each week. Otherwise, the information is similar to what you'd find in other pregnancy books. The "tips for Dad" are silly - they seem to assume that men are completely clueless - but my husband and I get a good laugh out of them. |
